Morgan had to work on the twins’ actual birthday, so they’d gotten permission to go shopping with some girls from school, and they scheduled the family pool party for later in the month. With great persistence, the girls had talked her into a co-ed birthday party. They insisted that turning fifteen and being banned from boys was archaic, and Morgan wasn’t swayed. It wasn’t until they exclaimed that Lewis had ruined their lives did she relent.

She was ornery, and the heart disease diagnoses had not calmed her bristly personality. But now and then, John would find that she was softer, more willing to dance to his old records, and reminisce on the life they’d led.

The girls celebrated their tenth birthday last month, and Lewis moved to university around the same time. Hard to believe that I finished with one teenager just for the girls to start that joyous time all too soon. My parents like to think they had it rough raising me, but they lack all realization on what it is like to raise twin girls that are filled with silly bones.

Cicely couldn’t see the chalkboard, so naturally the entire bunch of us had to get our eyes checked. Of course, the only one that had an eye issue was Cicely, seeing she was the only one who couldn’t see in the first place. Sometimes I think Morgan overreacts. Cicely doesn’t even care that she has glasses now, she’s just happy that she can see.

My Mom announced to me two years ago that she intends to retire when she turns sixty-seven. Her intention was for me to get my resume in order so I could be taken seriously when I apply. I’ve never been as focused in my career before, always knowing that my Mom was in it for the long haul. Now though, I know I need to get in before someone like Dr. Dwyer gets the position, because he’s only a few years my senior, and it’s not likely I would ever get the chance to be Chief of Staff again. This is it for me, my only chance to obtain my dream.

I started the sixth grade this fall, and everyone was worried that I wouldn’t be able to adjust. Grandma is always talking about how my Dad was such a handful as a teenager. What she really means is that he was a horrible kid. I’m not like that, I know I’m not, but sometimes it seems that people expect me to be hotheaded like he was.

Zeke has been my son-in-law for two and a half years now, and I’m still strong in my opinion that they aren’t a fit pair. Morgan is clearly out of his league, but they are married, and divorce is not an option at this point, so I try and make my peace.

The twins help with this. I never knew that I’d enjoy the role as Grandpa, as much as I do. Even when they are not in the best of spirits, it doesn’t make me angry like I’d be with Morgan at this age.
